During this time the McMurdo is prepped for the upcoming Mainbody flights where most of the personnel will arrive either to stay and work or travel on to other stations and field camps.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwX6cBtTQ-tRRGdEvlsAPBuki9qKPElVCIrSYbKDBT-t6YRaIAE8vOm0gwf7UWtwPR3FUxx8kqMSVdcZVIk7GF3H9wdAfvupkoBz75DsrDg4nMEXjMyzfcLjSeZYff66EVJnueGnBz6vI/s1600/second+season+w+auroras+029.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627557025504115570" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwX6cBtTQ-tRRGdEvlsAPBuki9qKPElVCIrSYbKDBT-t6YRaIAE8vOm0gwf7UWtwPR3FUxx8kqMSVdcZVIk7GF3H9wdAfvupkoBz75DsrDg4nMEXjMyzfcLjSeZYff66EVJnueGnBz6vI/s400/second+season+w+auroras+029.JPG" /></a> The cold was amazing, so crisp it reminded me so much of the winters back in Michigan ( or how they used to be ) and the darkness and the stars were so beautiful.. I checked into my hostel , ran out to grab something to eat then crashed for the remainder of the night.<br /><br /> The next morning the woman at the desk told me about some of the closest things to see which were the Haymarket ( a large flea market / fruit market on the ground floor with a large shopping mall and food court on the upper floors ) which is the place to go to buy designer knock offs for cheap LOL.. also great for souveniers to pass out to family and friends.<br /><br /> Then there was Chinatown ( although I wouldn't limit it to just Chinese, there are tons of Thai, Koreans and Japanese in this asian section of town.) I passed through and kept going to Darling Harbor and on the way discovered the Chinese Freindship Garden, a massive enclosed garden in the middle of the city that was so incredibly quiet and peaceful you never would have known you were in the midst of a bustling metropolis.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHZxrR5DPsCuiCNwJK-EtOc4cNN77TFSv2MT3agjOTzfPte1JELuqof3pVvXoLjLJj_S6vGN9KAXsVqrjj7iuCKnJqGXjz4gL6tjiD3t992gr3F2ql4uNwm-L4yGO_dFbyrDgLBbxYKjI/s1600/CHC2SYD+024.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470012008369783010" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHZxrR5DPsCuiCNwJK-EtOc4cNN77TFSv2MT3agjOTzfPte1JELuqof3pVvXoLjLJj_S6vGN9KAXsVqrjj7iuCKnJqGXjz4gL6tjiD3t992gr3F2ql4uNwm-L4yGO_dFbyrDgLBbxYKjI/s400/CHC2SYD+024.JPG" /></a><br />Here is the Bonsai section of the Gardens, a large open roofed room filled with beautiful bonsai trees.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiktIwMKRIR5_sPomehnNGrC9e4vnOqd-gVF9QXusZkHbNuVPLzQQdnKA-AdHAISqDTf0uPxRvpSjXFzRqgIoBbFP2wUnVsVC2Qpo3lmG-lUr1OHVRTpweS2GOp0-KoOwwoNDV10a1OEx0/s1600/CHC2SYD+033.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 401px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470011999303296082" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiktIwMKRIR5_sPomehnNGrC9e4vnOqd-gVF9QXusZkHbNuVPLzQQdnKA-AdHAISqDTf0uPxRvpSjXFzRqgIoBbFP2wUnVsVC2Qpo3lmG-lUr1OHVRTpweS2GOp0-KoOwwoNDV10a1OEx0/s400/CHC2SYD+033.JPG" /></a><br />There are many building throughout the gardens all built in the same ornate chinese style and scattered among hills and waterfalls and bamboo forests.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpgXexxFrxqicb2_sYnhKNFAesgaF690bH2PYDsCsD2F9_ZCebG-CCUHdeqC0Zygc6cOJgw4YdHz2WYugzqeKRTSnFKfRfoQzrGTlcw4SjxUJ7rwugkMENUeUl2sbcGaVvy68GEABZ1k0/s1600/CHC2SYD+041.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470011989492514242" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpgXexxFrxqicb2_sYnhKNFAesgaF690bH2PYDsCsD2F9_ZCebG-CCUHdeqC0Zygc6cOJgw4YdHz2WYugzqeKRTSnFKfRfoQzrGTlcw4SjxUJ7rwugkMENUeUl2sbcGaVvy68GEABZ1k0/s400/CHC2SYD+041.JPG" /></a><br /><br />The moon gate opened from the path into a serene little peninsula along the giant pond.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuiBr2ZFisKt7vgFn0Ks_yruGPW9l2kwvSEjH_dbPS6d3unYsrcMEuyfry2dH29IFVZysmig85nO8IeMrsII2PPseddOGGeIapWhvAwSUwoGcZiHnKB1cr03czScOYynzb8PbWjJ6k5Es/s1600/CHC2SYD+051.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470011983417847266" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuiBr2ZFisKt7vgFn0Ks_yruGPW9l2kwvSEjH_dbPS6d3unYsrcMEuyfry2dH29IFVZysmig85nO8IeMrsII2PPseddOGGeIapWhvAwSUwoGcZiHnKB1cr03czScOYynzb8PbWjJ6k5Es/s400/CHC2SYD+051.JPG" /></a><br /> Me next to the rock formations that make up one of the many waterfalls in the gardens. I did need to stay in town during my week there in order to have my bloddwork done for the next season ( I figured I'd get it done while I was there and let the company foot the bill ), if not for doing that I would have traveled the islands as many of my co-workers did.</div><div> </div><div> The city has an amazing Botanical Gardens and I spent much time wandering through them.. it was quite helpful that the main gate was right across from the YMCA where I stayed. I booked a dorm room there so I had 5 other roomies during my stay but for only $18 a night I wasn't going to complain especially since most of my days were spent wandering around the city.</div><div> </div><div> The annual garden festival was going on and there we're a huge number of special display throughout the city for the event, one of my favorites being the grass growing on the side of the museum with a lawn mower fastened to the builing as if it were mowing the grass.</div><div> </div><div> I spent one day out at Brighton, a beach front suburb where I got to watch people crab fishing from the pier and others surfing in the early morning tide. </div><div> </div><div> There are many statues scattered in Christchurchs various parks ( they have a lot of parks ) and here is a picture of the one deticated to Robert Scott , one of the original explorers racing to discover the Antarctic and make it to the South Pole. The photos of his hut from the early expeditions are among my post while on the ice.</div><div> </div><div> I also spent much of my time blowing through my money ( not really ) by eating out( real food ) with many of my co-workers as they arrived throughout the week to Christchurch, there are so many truly fantastic restaurants with awesome food and great beer as well :-)</div><div> </div><div> My time threre many not have sounded too exciting but I certainly enjoyed myself, it's a beautiful city in a beautiful country and I can't wait to go back and explore it even more.</div><div> </div><div>-B</div></div></div></div></div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997771405411079262.post-26700531209521742102010-05-06T07:10:00.000-07:002010-05-06T07:35:45.674-07:00OMG! I will have to do it in several posts though LOL</div><br /><br /><div>Unfortunately the weather at the station had become rather crappy my last days there and I wasn't able to do much as far as hiking.. I pretty much spent the days deciding what I wanted to keep with me to travel what I wanted to leave there and what I wanted to mail back home. I ended up mailing back two suitcases full of uneeded clothing and souveniers which definately lighted my load, I really didn't want to drag all that stuff through new Zealand and Australia.</div><div> </div><div> The pics I put on here are of the Emperor penguin that wandered onto the runway the day of my flight.. the firemen had to keep shooing it away so that it wasn't in the path of the plane ( I wonder if it was a sign that it didn't want me to go LOL )</div><div> </div><div> Then there is what I'll refer to as the preflight lounge.. we all had to stand out on the runway waiting for the plane to land before we could leave.. I think they could have at least offered us some cocoa or shots of whiskey ( it was and 9 degrees and the wind was kicking )</div><div> </div><div> Next pic is of Rachel the baking assistant at McMurdo and one of my favorite people to work with, she had gotten the job there after graduating for the Baking and Pastry program at Johnson and Wales... the type of culinary school I only wish I could have afforded. I'm hoping to be on the first flights back there in August so that I can see her again.. she's such a happy and positive person.</div><div> </div><div> That's me in my parka waiting for the plane.. I had to stand behind the Terrabus to block the wind from blowing my hood down. Brrrrrr</div><div> </div><div> And finally there is the sun as it's slowing working it's way down the horizon, it won't be full darkness till like mid-April and from the weather reports I see that it's getting progressively colder ( -30 with the wind right now )</div><div> </div><div> I left the ice and 5 short hours later landed in Christchurch , New Zealand of course the plane didn't get in until almost midnight and then we all had to turn in out work uniforms and cold weather gear before being shuttled to our various hotels for some well deserved rest in comfy queen beds rather than the little twins we had all become used to.</div><div> </div><div>-B</div></div></div></div></div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997771405411079262.post-33441502330297417592010-02-02T22:14:00.001-08:002010-02-02T22:38:25.346-08:00They say it's my Birthday....<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe4rsjLLrjH_bNx-9CtP1jYrp4qeI9bzG2g3Tgn2IcgmtogFHZVDUFBMa76pEGuF9qFxJhyUadc72QWXjR7PzA-IA7eB020zOAA1gsznGP6bqd99Ps_YiYSaJIGpNDEOFHvBysdUxFfdU/s1600-h/NakedRugby.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433902737481703554" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe4rsjLLrjH_bNx-9CtP1jYrp4qeI9bzG2g3Tgn2IcgmtogFHZVDUFBMa76pEGuF9qFxJhyUadc72QWXjR7PzA-IA7eB020zOAA1gsznGP6bqd99Ps_YiYSaJIGpNDEOFHvBysdUxFfdU/s320/NakedRugby.jpg" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGP107iTI5xyY72xCTIzuAvvs6hFxyDFEGXPzJ9F7G1S-S49dUjfNBnQAUXRyGTUHc8iHqzywdpNOw5aVpAs7j-O1YBujKOgsukm2VMvtrAHuVSUVglOZeHsyw_QVG53RMD3JzjmVcn6Y/s1600-h/naked-rugby-players_668630n.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 258px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433902728811552498" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGP107iTI5xyY72xCTIzuAvvs6hFxyDFEGXPzJ9F7G1S-S49dUjfNBnQAUXRyGTUHc8iHqzywdpNOw5aVpAs7j-O1YBujKOgsukm2VMvtrAHuVSUVglOZeHsyw_QVG53RMD3JzjmVcn6Y/s320/naked-rugby-players_668630n.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div>So, it just so happens to be my Birthday down here, which is funny since it won't be my B-day till tomorrow back home. I was happy to see them and thought I had missed out on the opportunity when the Emperor Penguins were spotted out by the airfield ( could get a shuttle driver to stop for me and when they finally offered sign ups to get driven out to see them , the sheets filled up right away DAMMIT .</p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p></p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p>Anyway, I'm glad I got to see them and maybe with some luck I'll get to see more before I leave.. the icebreaker came in on Monday and broke up huge path in the sea for the scheduled supply ships to come into.</p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p></p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p>They have warned us that some of the longshoremen that come in to unload the boats are kinda shady and to be sure to keep your stuff locked up ( things tend to disappear during the offload ). I got some shots of the icebreaker ( OD EN- from Norway , what a shocker of a name for a boat from Norway LOL )that I have yet to take off my camera but I will post soon.</p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p>That's it for today, just some dancing penguins.</p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p></p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p>-B</p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p></p></div></div></div></div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997771405411079262.post-10821056839344786532010-01-05T15:27:00.001-08:002010-01-05T15:40:36.895-08:00Icestock!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM3EJDmIVSYPIAxHTcXthCoctoe5NuPhqspmbOMDokZ9TI5VLdGqrY7jHmbAonbTCe76PsWAxzebLkfS985NVZhx2D4JLhPEzXvH9WkxCG-tTY6qFCoVuD8__jdCW1k3kDT3OeNce8jw8/s1600-h/icestock+007.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423401796339351634" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM3EJDmIVSYPIAxHTcXthCoctoe5NuPhqspmbOMDokZ9TI5VLdGqrY7jHmbAonbTCe76PsWAxzebLkfS985NVZhx2D4JLhPEzXvH9WkxCG-tTY6qFCoVuD8__jdCW1k3kDT3OeNce8jw8/s320/icestock+007.JPG" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitZFzFyCIQ-wgK2z5AVfFKbdg1C9eeLRz9-2FyK_xvLx4YW54sXQKrcl4PjehIZJf8hS_601XcjX_X8DeddDHccYZ7W2jJ19qbgdLZ40c11G7Chnu62M-4eVomEq8c-5S2Ym9XcmGEmzU/s1600-h/icestock+009.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423401789188618178" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitZFzFyCIQ-wgK2z5AVfFKbdg1C9eeLRz9-2FyK_xvLx4YW54sXQKrcl4PjehIZJf8hS_601XcjX_X8DeddDHccYZ7W2jJ19qbgdLZ40c11G7Chnu62M-4eVomEq8c-5S2Ym9XcmGEmzU/s320/icestock+009.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuedbYzBsJH0MSjgvt4j_x1bgF_wLnoxTBQnPFYXX8WCwtne8PgQlbpimGhGGYGBgNesUcP9ZT1ztWykUfNNk02vOlwMS9K1ozvVeBaVsk_9qt1918dWA9_RJZQzmJbN9IqEMA3-FvygI/s1600-h/icestock+005.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423401787223849314" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuedbYzBsJH0MSjgvt4j_x1bgF_wLnoxTBQnPFYXX8WCwtne8PgQlbpimGhGGYGBgNesUcP9ZT1ztWykUfNNk02vOlwMS9K1ozvVeBaVsk_9qt1918dWA9_RJZQzmJbN9IqEMA3-FvygI/s320/icestock+005.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOGdZ1XEbqT3ffBnuCswjrtqkVfrpuzTMgqUycEGlqmJNli1VY0lhq58GyUQ9ZhPCAuTh1Iylyikl8dgZEV6G1Uhk4IeIkaZEDRFXUFQpZESR2ci0LaTjuc-ZLstl-SR_-CRXqTzIAHXU/s1600-h/icestock+003.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423401778033699330" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOGdZ1XEbqT3ffBnuCswjrtqkVfrpuzTMgqUycEGlqmJNli1VY0lhq58GyUQ9ZhPCAuTh1Iylyikl8dgZEV6G1Uhk4IeIkaZEDRFXUFQpZESR2ci0LaTjuc-ZLstl-SR_-CRXqTzIAHXU/s320/icestock+003.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiENC3twGy40Jx7ZnrmNwdvObn-zbKJQK6goYoVFcFjPIRTkXfgoHdcqE_2ktjfPwJPmFd_KILviT9waD3LF-V-HUnk_eqz0MXQwAq29uLXV2hYeSBUGkl72EcriCXAWqEgvX8cf0ZFL54/s1600-h/icestock+001.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423401766161389746" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiENC3twGy40Jx7ZnrmNwdvObn-zbKJQK6goYoVFcFjPIRTkXfgoHdcqE_2ktjfPwJPmFd_KILviT9waD3LF-V-HUnk_eqz0MXQwAq29uLXV2hYeSBUGkl72EcriCXAWqEgvX8cf0ZFL54/s320/icestock+001.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>THE BIGGEST MUSICAL EVENT ON THE CONTINENT!!</div><br /><br /><div>O.K. it's a bunch of bands that have managed to form here on the ice, some people bring instrument with them and there is also a band room on the station where you can go play borrowed instruments or there is the gear issue where you can check out instruments.</div><div>The music was pretty great and the atmosphere was very outdoor music festival ( t-shirts for sale, face painting, tye dyeing, free chili, brats, and hamburgers as well as Baileys in your coffee YAY! After the crash they used the surrounding area to dump random trash and burn garbage, not it's up to the environmental department do organize clean ups of the old sites like that. They tell me plans are in the works to finally remove the Pegasus crash wreckage.</div><div> </div><div> In the distance there is a picture of Mt. Erebus, the closest active volcano to the station and the smoke coming off the top is easily seen thanks to the fantastic weather that day. The tiny red box with tank treads is a Pitt Bullie, that is what we rode in coming from the main runway to the wreckage site.. it sure isn't built for comfort LOL.</div><div> I'm not sure what kind of plane is in the picture but it is one of the smaller ones used to fly people into the smaller field camps out on the ice surrounding the station where they do various research, ice drilling and the like.</div><div> </div><div> I also learned that I need to apply more sunscreen, I got a hell of a burn on my face working all afternoon out in the bright sun with all the reflective snow.. I had to work this morning for a bit to get some of the desserts for dinner baked off ( lot's and lot's of pies ), only had to work a short day though and will be on my way to enjoy the early Christmas dinner for the Galley staff.</div><div> </div><div> Went for a hike late last week and was able to snap a picture of Scott Base ( the New Zealand Antarctic Post ), it looks a lot cleaner than it's gritty American counterpart LOL. Hopefully things at work will die down and I'll be able to make it inside the base on one of these American nights.</div><div> </div><div> The building is where my new dorm room is, much nicer than the transient housing I was in and only one roomie instead of four YAY!</div><div> </div><div> Yes, that's an F-350.. the USAP EDITION.. you won't find that model at your local Ford dealer, it would turn heads crusing down the street on tank treads though.. or maybe because the top speed is like 10 MPH.</div><div> </div><div> Took a small snack back to my room, fresh baked bread that I made myself.. some awesome new zealand Bleu Cheese with Brie and a nice coffe cup full O' pinot to wash it down.</div><div> </div><div> The mountain view is across the frozen Ross Sea to the land on the other side, in a few weeks an icebreakeing ship called the Odin is going to tear through the ice to make a path for the incoming fuel and supply ships that are due in early january, ships only make it in once a year to restock all supplies ( except for fresh produce , mail and of course people which are all flown in ).</div><div> </div><div> I'm off work tomorrow and plan on doing a bit more hiking.. I'll try a different direction to get some new pictures of different snowy mountian tops and frozen seas.</div><div> </div><div> Hope everyone has a Great Christmas </div><div> </div><div>-Brian</div></div></div></div></div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997771405411079262.post-60823761727090060152009-12-15T22:12:00.001-08:002009-12-15T22:34:54.419-08:00Skua - Skua - Doo<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyLkRU5uPg45uonFI6orzn2_cpWsT0J9aTzBM_bqCpNasXnWkDdDjvnjFk1syF8Ja7kRlNN-rvYq-zzYkTV9Oo8NDju-_lxkR8yZkmyTU3UoM-LZFsbS_lknom41T8OZcjyrnZo6aSpp0/s1600-h/Skuas+%26+seals+006.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415713592437452578" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyLkRU5uPg45uonFI6orzn2_cpWsT0J9aTzBM_bqCpNasXnWkDdDjvnjFk1syF8Ja7kRlNN-rvYq-zzYkTV9Oo8NDju-_lxkR8yZkmyTU3UoM-LZFsbS_lknom41T8OZcjyrnZo6aSpp0/s320/Skuas+%26+seals+006.JPG" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnNrazyMGreenUI9g3Tjiogob_25Ok5rGjtKEzOD-H9xCm63eDTUyoDVpCYOdlRgHYZ_rzp58agcJ2Mhga1dU3ZwedQqxJiwMn-moXzRTmMc3pGEBRFzFHsg5oom5w4QS4g0WoHFGqm1k/s1600-h/Skuas+%26+seals+010.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415713580988876866" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnNrazyMGreenUI9g3Tjiogob_25Ok5rGjtKEzOD-H9xCm63eDTUyoDVpCYOdlRgHYZ_rzp58agcJ2Mhga1dU3ZwedQqxJiwMn-moXzRTmMc3pGEBRFzFHsg5oom5w4QS4g0WoHFGqm1k/s320/Skuas+%26+seals+010.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxaei-NgomZtrfWmRMidUhSelLaGtFlnEeIFyq4FOPhmJJC2qw5GV0lnkXMYh_zGL0rgV1cgcLV4n2qK-CWujmLX0tbEIBRN0hO9W3PSskN8Bb5vuCG0BokHnyVMQ2LnSqXp-XThVrGm4/s1600-h/Skuas+%26+seals+004.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415713571629258290" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxaei-NgomZtrfWmRMidUhSelLaGtFlnEeIFyq4FOPhmJJC2qw5GV0lnkXMYh_zGL0rgV1cgcLV4n2qK-CWujmLX0tbEIBRN0hO9W3PSskN8Bb5vuCG0BokHnyVMQ2LnSqXp-XThVrGm4/s320/Skuas+%26+seals+004.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfY6wS9jOANWJd7zvlzylof5THE5mHWbiBr0b69s_4aKHeTRC2yXWrdhT2-Vo1wOIWmKRIu5NFRTH-Io1v_kEtZlul0hqwsPjfusL7H0xXzCE1SO5af-iG1cgauk54FBewscgY4caRRCQ/s1600-h/Skuas+%26+seals+005.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415713561712125522" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfY6wS9jOANWJd7zvlzylof5THE5mHWbiBr0b69s_4aKHeTRC2yXWrdhT2-Vo1wOIWmKRIu5NFRTH-Io1v_kEtZlul0hqwsPjfusL7H0xXzCE1SO5af-iG1cgauk54FBewscgY4caRRCQ/s320/Skuas+%26+seals+005.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvUMphDN8Q3ofoCuqhOiD7PuZHQKWbvrcern-0XsPsrCSqvfwsQana0tCVkUzWEV_Sri-w2Efm7AwICMAK-SYPLyNaMf9Nkul1byrnyr-CHalv3VHPAQbUhi43ACj3O_2-jChF_QFzt_0/s1600-h/Skuas+%26+seals+001.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415713555591088514" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvUMphDN8Q3ofoCuqhOiD7PuZHQKWbvrcern-0XsPsrCSqvfwsQana0tCVkUzWEV_Sri-w2Efm7AwICMAK-SYPLyNaMf9Nkul1byrnyr-CHalv3VHPAQbUhi43ACj3O_2-jChF_QFzt_0/s320/Skuas+%26+seals+001.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>Skuas are like giant seagulls, but brown and have no qualms about soaring in and snatching food from your hand ( signs warn to not go outside with exposed food ). It's not huge but I will only have one roomy instead of four and the place has a window ( I have already laid claim to the bed next to it LOL ).. it's a short walk across the compound from the building where I lived and worked before but still close enough that I don't really need a coat to get to work in the morning.</div><div> </div><div> I also plan on doing my Christmas shopping tomorrow so don't anyone be surprised by the Antarctica T-shirts when they arrive mid-January.. the mail tends to move slowly out of here.</div><div> </div><div>Hope everyone is well and having a Holiday Season even though it is colder in Michigan than it is here. :-)</div><div> </div><div>I plan on going to Scott Base tomorrow for American Night ( where the New Zealanders welcome people for McMurdo ) Maybe I'll get some great pictures to post, if so plan on em' being here soon.</div><div> </div><div>-B</div></div></div></div></div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997771405411079262.post-79892671398840249462009-12-13T19:20:00.000-08:002009-12-13T19:35:41.338-08:00Monday Monday, la la - la da da da<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv984ywVHJ_aj6m5UJwgqlMlYbwewzsCxGZPe7amIdj3XmGfonMJ0klfTCdjYFp3tQJcO8hvKGyj_sZ26zRmgTL6XFt75FJcCuQDlka99fs4_Z_gJQ0-FDkpyONVbcFZUsXZ1RUahjWpw/s1600-h/McMurdo+008.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414926793416614674" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv984ywVHJ_aj6m5UJwgqlMlYbwewzsCxGZPe7amIdj3XmGfonMJ0klfTCdjYFp3tQJcO8hvKGyj_sZ26zRmgTL6XFt75FJcCuQDlka99fs4_Z_gJQ0-FDkpyONVbcFZUsXZ1RUahjWpw/s320/McMurdo+008.JPG" /></a><br /><div> Backtowork today after my day off yesterday, visited the seals again and did a bit more wandering. I need to read more. </div><div> Nothing to really report, had a staff meeting today warning us of the impending busy Christmas season.. many different holiday parties are going on in the next few weeks and there's gonna be a ton of food to make for them. </div><div> Our company holiday party is tonight at one of the bars on the station YAY! free food and booze LOL. I have some more pictures that I'll post tomorrow.. I forgot my photo card :-(</div><div> I'll be off work on Thursday and plan on going to Scott base ( The New Zealanders station) it'll be american night where we are allowed to visit and socialize, people tell me the landscape around there is really cool.</div><div> </div><div>Off to dinner now and going to try to call home before it gets too late there.</div><div> </div><div>-B</div><div> </div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997771405411079262.post-55875376044832844102009-12-12T03:20:00.000-08:002009-12-12T03:32:21.639-08:00Ass end O' the world<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixpdrRFfHDyAh-dlD5ZsUjaibq4m-HQNESB6Wc5YQ9cAyjWII-OLZ63hqlHUcI-Lt6ZDoWAxLdCfYUVjt0tiV4gNxozSFm4GN96EXuerrgw-qj1z3_YkWMmgquhBsukQ_XqKMR7z6WxCk/s1600-h/antarctica_mcmurdo.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 319px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414308335838910018" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixpdrRFfHDyAh-dlD5ZsUjaibq4m-HQNESB6Wc5YQ9cAyjWII-OLZ63hqlHUcI-Lt6ZDoWAxLdCfYUVjt0tiV4gNxozSFm4GN96EXuerrgw-qj1z3_YkWMmgquhBsukQ_XqKMR7z6WxCk/s320/antarctica_mcmurdo.jpg" /></a> Just kidding, I'm loving it here, I just stumbled ..er.. came out of the bar at 12:30 AM and the sun is still up although it is a bit overcast. Being here is pretty surreal, I met a bunch of kiwi's (new zealanders)at the bar tonight and they were all hilarious.. an amazingly friendly bunch who certainly enjoy their drink LOL. ran across a both of my room mates and pretty much the entire kitchen staff at one of the bars here, until some girl passed out... nothing clears a bar like a drunk chick passing out in the middle of the place. The crowd here is pretty young or so it seems to me, (one of the 29 year old kiwis told me I was old..BASTARD! LOL)<br /> Anywhoo, I am enjoying the continenet thus far.. several people have told me it is fairly easy to get a work visa for New Zealand and I may try to find a job there for a few months when I'm done down here.<br /><br /><div></div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997771405411079262.post-59882102812995360482009-12-10T22:54:00.000-08:002009-12-10T23:13:47.086-08:00Wandering McMurdo<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw6Qk3JbjSgchQW09l2JJZxJCQDjI3XIDXTByhVQwraSrc6CFF41VxE4dsUlgnfyMgumduXrzLTLc041e0MRJNOz4bZxl4ctMWG5BpPITYqniZydh32A1KAyn0-1a-4TlafeiKWM9Ggdc/s1600-h/McMurdo+010.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413868894321045986" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw6Qk3JbjSgchQW09l2JJZxJCQDjI3XIDXTByhVQwraSrc6CFF41VxE4dsUlgnfyMgumduXrzLTLc041e0MRJNOz4bZxl4ctMWG5BpPITYqniZydh32A1KAyn0-1a-4TlafeiKWM9Ggdc/s320/McMurdo+010.JPG" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgywZcPsLMNmHcEGFt4TK0Tao0CxnTV4SsvMWW8zjYVoKyQ9Az_VY2K8LGCE7r0TAIF0I3588yoyF8w0mjxiPoZpgicOIL_rUrVWZ_6Oh9LKU9Jw36HG0im0o_Hk6Adryi95AM3CVRoA9Q/s1600-h/McMurdo+009.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413868884035510498" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgywZcPsLMNmHcEGFt4TK0Tao0CxnTV4SsvMWW8zjYVoKyQ9Az_VY2K8LGCE7r0TAIF0I3588yoyF8w0mjxiPoZpgicOIL_rUrVWZ_6Oh9LKU9Jw36HG0im0o_Hk6Adryi95AM3CVRoA9Q/s320/McMurdo+009.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixhmLmPA0h2QAncgRuZizm2ZT4jYGOlufRrRG1fjNbnq049Vz7bV5GCqYbG-zBZ0YKCzNPHBcIJAH2tWorMmPLA7HdnsojTsRDD7Ud91_f9g_u4O2dJi9PxxaYsT6Tv82tYh4IJq7kSZ0/s1600-h/McMurdo+004.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413868879982522002" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixhmLmPA0h2QAncgRuZizm2ZT4jYGOlufRrRG1fjNbnq049Vz7bV5GCqYbG-zBZ0YKCzNPHBcIJAH2tWorMmPLA7HdnsojTsRDD7Ud91_f9g_u4O2dJi9PxxaYsT6Tv82tYh4IJq7kSZ0/s320/McMurdo+004.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvKHPdf_eQs8qxhrp6mbmARacSPP9FSIarP5pVxj1kHkutL4ciZ1twZG5lF0aLj0iX3RDdhqWFdSwbd1m3tObUGglzksxLnFXhZG_kEa2a-i_bNYnJNmzLYTCbQTCm7qC9IB2gGJmvGjU/s1600-h/McMurdo+014.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413868868247872498" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvKHPdf_eQs8qxhrp6mbmARacSPP9FSIarP5pVxj1kHkutL4ciZ1twZG5lF0aLj0iX3RDdhqWFdSwbd1m3tObUGglzksxLnFXhZG_kEa2a-i_bNYnJNmzLYTCbQTCm7qC9IB2gGJmvGjU/s320/McMurdo+014.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT1X4KbOY1rI46OxGhhJI51K2bpkcb8qA2lGH38jo-8JWX-o5bjymfqlfRmd3pLyw1XNgUH8I0l_NMQGmzZr2TRJsmJEklt78OjGP2qg7iQXZWA7ViHAv8dpp-UoDt-K0bHWuVnmIT0ZM/s1600-h/McMurdo+003.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413868866614411042" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT1X4KbOY1rI46OxGhhJI51K2bpkcb8qA2lGH38jo-8JWX-o5bjymfqlfRmd3pLyw1XNgUH8I0l_NMQGmzZr2TRJsmJEklt78OjGP2qg7iQXZWA7ViHAv8dpp-UoDt-K0bHWuVnmIT0ZM/s320/McMurdo+003.JPG" /></a><br />Here's some more pics of my current home, They didn't load in the order I wanted but oh well. I couldn't get any closer to get a better picture since they are really strict about it, it's considered harrasment and they will boot ya for it and may even send you to jail :-(</div><div> </div><div> The other picture is of the Station from the Scott Hut, the sky is typically that awesome blue.. there were some light clouds today but it was sunny and gorgeous.. from what I hear much better than the weather back in Michigan.</div><div> </div><div> Was another long baking day, made a ton of cupcakes ( cappuccino, rocky road, lemon and german chocolate ) and chocolate tirimisu and helped out with all the bread too. I hear it will get busier as we try to get ready for Christmas.. it's very big here even without Santa. There are mandatory stretching breaks during the day ( yeah, really!) , the kitchen staff is really friendly and I'm sure I'll enjoy my time here. WTF!!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL4DwJcRSdBl47ZphegVJQWp3korPOfdm_qprLY6AupR6NCZU42cztyqRWBOze_X8NF4U7zsGZ_RT6CGiWIatENR928WvMlKfbph5Yn-aXwLXuHir__8j3qDimrUQVbcLRA6Or_68tYtE/s1600-h/mordor.png"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 256px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411934237417875506" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL4DwJcRSdBl47ZphegVJQWp3korPOfdm_qprLY6AupR6NCZU42cztyqRWBOze_X8NF4U7zsGZ_RT6CGiWIatENR928WvMlKfbph5Yn-aXwLXuHir__8j3qDimrUQVbcLRA6Or_68tYtE/s320/mordor.png" /></a><br /><div>Just got into Christchurch ,New Zealand and it is AWESOME here! Green and lush and mountianous unlike the tundra I'll be heading into soon LOL.</div><br /><div>The flight here was great, Quantus is my new favorite airline ( comfy seats, pillows, blankets, eye masks for sleeping, tons of new movies, loads of food and drinks and even a toothbrush and toothpaste to refresh your dirty mouth in the morning.) That was L.A. to Auckland where I got on a smaller plane to fly to Christchurch, I'm gonna go wander around the city centre and see the Christmas parade they are having today.</div><div> </div><div> The hotel they put me up in is very cool, Hotel So, it's a swanky little european style room ( but actually has the full bath in the room ) Quite clean and cozy, my sister Karen would dig it.</div><br /><div>Tomorrow I get more time to wander around in the morning and then go to pick up my cold weather gear at the Clothing Distribution Center. Dunno what time I ship out on Tuesday, there are actually a bunch of other people here going to the ice for a variety of jobs so I won't be alone on the flight.</div><div> </div><div>Gonna head out and see the town now while it's early.</div><div> </div><div> </div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997771405411079262.post-32285742701935371082009-12-03T03:54:00.000-08:002009-12-03T04:26:25.713-08:00Getting ready for the Ice.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_daNyO7tl2Q4jJcGnLPm-OlosQ-PWYYWnUqNhH0WyDCAXcxLjrWSDBRAT-B78iCVK8LYLIJzNpUEjWmCUxGzxnfOkN8wVdKPrKyPnGL9J74ndVd2N9G-slHTFUVGVUZ8XQ2XcCmMbK0U/s1600-h/hoover+b.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 170px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 226px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410981662771348258" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_daNyO7tl2Q4jJcGnLPm-OlosQ-PWYYWnUqNhH0WyDCAXcxLjrWSDBRAT-B78iCVK8LYLIJzNpUEjWmCUxGzxnfOkN8wVdKPrKyPnGL9J74ndVd2N9G-slHTFUVGVUZ8XQ2XcCmMbK0U/s320/hoover+b.jpg" /></a><br /><div>I just checked the weather at McMurdo and it's a toasty 30 degrees. ( the pic is me at the Hoover Dam, I won't be wearing shorts out while on the ice. )</div><br /><div>I just got my travel itinerary and will be flying from Detroit to Chicago to Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand to Christ Church, New Zealand. My plane will be getting into Christ Church early Sunday afternoon and they've put me up in a hotel until Tuesday when I catch the plane to McMurdo Station,I'm trying hard to carefully pack so that I'm not dragging an unnecessarily overfilled suitcase halfway around the world.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Mom bought me a new digital camera for Christmas, so I'll be able to take lots of pictures and hopefully be able to post them on here. Also have been stocking up on warm socks and thermal undies, they supply me with all my work clothes and the extreme cold weather gear. </div><div> </div><div>I'm really looking forward to this adventure and honestly am nervous as well, I've never been out of the country for more than short vacations. </div><div> </div><div>I will be back to Michigan around the end of February / early March and plan on returning to Las Vegas. </div><div> </div><div>Dunno what else to put here for now.. never done one of these before, guess I'll just play it by ear.</div>BriGuyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13317469080913891152noreply@blogger.com0
